Railroad Technology Corporation has created a new design and remanufacturing process for conversion of technologically obsolete covered hopper cars to 6111 cubic capacity high side gondola cars. The cars were specifically designed in collaboration with a Class I railroad for their fast growing "C&D" (construction demolition debris) service. This program was successfully launched in 2006 with an initial order of 135 cars valued at $6,075,000. The remanufactured gondola car is produced for approximately 55% of the cost of a comparable new car. The car design meets the criteria of the U.S. Patent Office to qualify as a "Process Patent" and has been approved by the AAR (Association of American Railroads).
