Intermodal containers offer shippers the greatest flexibility of moving imports or exports to their final destination. Ocean freight containers mounted on chassis become highway trailers. On freight cars, intermodal containers operate in service known as "COFC" for container on flat car or "TOFC" for trailer on flat car. The first generation of containers dating from the 1980's were primarily 20' and 40' all steel units with a width of 8'. Today, second and third generation containers are primarily 45', 48', or 53' aluminum units with a width of 8' 6". Container construction is standardized to enable all units to operate seamlessly in today's intermodal environment.
Container Features, 53' aluminum dry van unit:
- Constructed in accordance with AAR M-930-88
- Height 9' 6", width 8' 6", length 53'
- Maximum height on chassis, 13' 6"
- Aluminum construction
- Lightweight, corrosion resistant
- Useful life of 20-30 years
