Diesel electric locomotives used in railroad freight service range in size from 1500 HP (horsepower) switchers to 6,000 HP state-of-the-art giants. Some 1500 HP units in service today were built new in the early 1950's, remanufactured in the early 1980's and sold in the mid-1990's for between $50,000 and $75,000 each depending upon condition. By contrast, 6,000 HP units sell for more than $1,000,000 and feature many new technological innovations. Recent consolidations in the railroad industry have resulted in surplus power and a buyers market as supply for certain types exceeds domestic demand.
