Track laying and related track maintenance systems used by railroads falls under the category of "maintenance of way" equipment. This includes a variety of rail mounted machines used to repair the ties, ballast and rail of the track being worked. The production ballast tamper lifts track and "tamps" ballast under crossties with a light beam and laser alignment system to control the amount of track raised at each crosstie while the track is repositioned following the alignment system.
