Open top hopper cars are used for a number of high-density commodities primarily coal, coke, stone aggregates, wood chips, iron ore and ballast with coal transportation being the most common service. Open top hoppers are "self-clearing" cars which discharge their commodities through automatic bottom doors which are activated at the unloading facility. There are a number of automatic discharge outlet types that may be specified depending upon shipper requirements.
